Skincare innovation doesn’t happen overnight. Breakthrough ingredients, revamped formulations, and new product formats take years of clinical research, expert input, and consumer feedback. Unlike the fast-changing trends in makeup, hair color, and nail art, skincare shifts are often more subtle.
For 2025, industry experts predict an evolution of existing trends rather than radical changes. Expect advanced sunscreens, potent body serums, and multitasking products to take center stage. Meanwhile, in-office treatments—like the viral “salmon sperm facial”—will likely influence what lands on store shelves.
The Rise of Skincare Minimalism
If you’ve ever found elaborate, multistep skincare routines overwhelming, expensive, or irritating to your skin, 2025 is your year. Experts predict a surge in simplified regimens featuring multifunctional products that deliver results without the fuss.
“There’s been a shift towards more minimalist routines involving multifunctional products that are just as effective [as using multiple products],” says board-certified dermatologist Morgan Rabach, MD.
Marisa Garshick, MD, echoes this sentiment, noting that overly complex routines often lead to sensitivity, breakouts, and irritation. “Many people were seeing this as a result of multistep, complicated routines,” she explains.

Dermatologists have long warned that more isn’t always better in skincare. Layering too many actives—or following viral TikTok trends—can trigger irritation or render certain ingredients ineffective. “Simplified routines work well,” says Dr. Garshick. “They’re easier to stick with and less likely to disrupt the skin barrier.”
Multitasking Products on the Rise
With potential economic shifts, multitasking skincare products could see even greater demand. According to Allure, new tariff policies under the incoming Trump administration may lead to price hikes of 10-60% on beauty products, both imported and domestic.
This could push consumers toward all-in-one products that offer multiple benefits—think moisturizers that double as primers or masks that hydrate and exfoliate. Expect more shoppers to ask dermatologists which steps they can cut from their routine without sacrificing results.
In 2025, skincare is all about smart, effective, and streamlined beauty. Less really is more.
