On Sunday, 23 June 2024 at Place Vendôme in Paris, Anna Wintour and her team launched the third Vogue World event, celebrating French fashion and sport in honor of the upcoming Olympics.
Just before the Haute Couture shows, celebrities and high-paying guests gathered in the cobbled plaza to witness a runway that spanned the 100 years since the last Paris Olympics in 1924. The show paired sports with different time periods, featuring dancers in 1960s fencing and 1970s gymnastics routines, while models showcased outfits reflecting those eras.
This wasn’t your typical catwalk of leggings and track shorts. One standout look came from Katy Perry, who wore an archival Noir Kei Ninomiya cut-out gown for the 1980s martial arts segment. Her dress, crafted from interlocking leather petals with a voluminous tulle-flower skirt, resembled a geometric masterpiece more than athletic wear. “It’s the first time I’ve ever walked,” she quipped in an Instagram story, “I mean, I walk every day, but… it’s couture.” See photos:
Naked dresses have been making a comeback, seen on celebrities like Elle Fanning, Kim Kardashian, and Doja Cat at the Met Gala, and Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, and Florence Pugh at the Oscars. While most rely on flesh-colored mesh or crystal netting, Perry’s dress boldly featured more skin than fabric, with only a small portion of her body covered by leather shapes.
